Now that’s it’s summer, you can ditch the dark colors and cozy corners in your home and trade them in for some bright, crisp color and décor that make the room look like, breezy, and oozing with summer vibes. There is no such thing as a right or wrong way to decorate your apartment in the summer, but, as a person who has an eye for all things bright and summery, I believe that I can help you with all of your summer décor questions and needs.

First, let’s chat color scheme. Unless you are moving into a brand new apartment, I doubt you are going to drop everything and paint your home. Have no fear, you can transition to a summer-oriented color scheme without painting your walls! A great way to incorporate summer in your apartment is by using colors like yellow, pink light purple, blues, light gray, creams, and whites.

You can start doing this by updating your accent pillows on your couch, chairs, and bed. Accent pillows are a great way to integrate patterns into your apartment as well. Below, I have outlined a couple ways to style accent pillows on your couch:

  • 2 pillows on the right corner of the couch: a large, patterned pillow with a white background and a geometric pattern utilizing any of the colors listed above, and a second, smaller, solid-colored pillow laying on top of the larger pillow boasting a color used in the larger pillow.
  • 3 pillows: one on the left-hand corner of the coach that is large and two-toned without any patterns and two on the right side of the couch boasting the same size and patterns talked about above.
  • 2 pillows: one on the right side and one on the left side both equal in size. One pillow is a furry light blue color and the other pillow is a furry yellow color. If you don’t like fuzzy things, you can also opt for canvas fabrics or velvet.

Another great way to incorporate summer into your décor is through accessories. For example, if you have coffee-table books, opt for large books that have one of the following combinations:

  • Light pinks, golds, and whites,
  • Dark blues, light purples, and whites
  • Golds, navy, and whites
  • Dark pinks, pastel yellows, and black or navy

If you like table-top bowls, fill the bowls with stone-fruits, succulents, flowers, or even candles instead of pine cones or instead of not filling it at all. If you aren’t into a big bowl or tray on your table(s), another great summer home accessory is flowers/succulents of some sort. You may worry that fresh plants and succulents involve a lot of upkeep, but they really don’t.

Think about how nice it would be to walk into your home after a long day of work and smelling fresh florals that remind you of sunshine, long walks, and breeziness. If plants aren’t your jam, go for other fun summer-eccentric accessories: geometric 3-D figures, vases, wooden signs instead of metal (metal is more wintery, wood is more summer), and much for. Great websites to find these summer accessories are listed below:

  • Wayfair
  • West Elm
  • Etsy
  • Urban Outfitters
  • Amazon

The final way to decorate your home for summer is through wall art and lighting. If you don’t have a lot of natural light coming into your apartment, your wall art and lighting combination can make or break the brightness going on in your home. Bright canvas pieces that aren’t black and white and use pastel colors and bright colors paired with tall, bright floor lamps or light fixtures in the wall will illuminate your living space and make you feel like you have more space and natural sunlight, even if you don’t have that many windows.

Another great form of “wall art” are floor mirrors or hanging mirrors. The mirrors paired with the lights make your living space look larger and they are also useful for when you are getting dressed for the day! Even though I am partial to canvas when it comes to wall art, you can also utilize picture frames that are white-wood to embrace summer and showcase your adoration for your loved ones! Depending on the space you have to work with, you can either opt for one large pastel-colored wall art piece or a few smaller pieces of wall art that have varying color schemes similar to the ones listed for the coffee table books.

There are so many different ways to embrace the onset of summer; don’t just stop after altering your wardrobe… incorporate summer into your everyday life and living space. If you aren’t sure about what you want to do and you need more visuals for the ideas listed above, utilize websites like Pinterest, BuzzFeed, Google Images, Stock Images, and various paper and online magazines. Good luck and happy decorating!
